The Judith Shakespeare Group
a Writing Circle of One’s Own!
for Women, Trans, and Nonbinary Writers
In Virginia Woolf’s treatise A Room of One’s Own, she concocted the life of Judith Shakespeare, imagined sister of William, to argue as to why gender parity was crucial to women’s success as writers. Inspired by Woolf’s immortal words, the Judith Shakespeare Writing Circle seeks to address two of the barriers that impede women, trans, and nonbinary writers: a “room of one’s own,” and a community to lean on.
What makes Judith Shakespeare different?
No final product requirement!
While you will likely amass a creative portfolio through regular attendance of the group, there is no requirement to produce a “finished” work at the end of this, giving you the freedom to explore any ideas that come to you.
Equal time dedicated to writing and sharing.
Judith Shakespeare sessions are designed to offer time to write on a prompt, write freely, and to share work with others.
The accountability of a writing class with the freedom of a drop-in writing group.
Participants will sign up for time to share in advance of each session, ensuring accountability on both the individual and group level. However, what you choose to share and the type of feedback you receive is up to you, ensuring a discussion that is community-driven rather than teacher-driven.
